History of Post Creek 44 Bar Steak & Tap House
Located just outside of St. Ignatius in the scenic Mission Valley, Post Creek 44 Bar Steak & Tap House has a long and evolving history deeply rooted in Montanas rural culture and roadside hospitality.
Early beginnings (1930s-1940s)
The origins of Post Creek 44 trace back to the late 1930s and early 40s, when a small roadside tavern known locally as The 44 Bar was established along what would become one of western Montana‘s most traveled routes. At the time, Highway 93 served as a major corridor connecting communities throughout the Mission Valley, making the location an ideal stop for travelers, ranchers, and loggers.
These early years reflected the character of many Montana establishments of the era- simple, rugged, and community focused. The original building operated primarily as a tavern, offering drinks, basic meals, and a warm gathering for locals.
Mid-Century Growth (1950s-70s)
Throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, the 44 Bar became a familiar landmark in the region. During this period, it developed a reputation as a classic Montana roadside bar, a place where ranchers stopped after long days, loggers gathered between shifts, hunters gathered during fall seasons and travelers found a welcoming, friendly stop along Highway 93. The establishment remained largely unchanged during these decades, maintaining its rustic charm and strong local following.
Transition to Bar & Grill (1980s-90s)
By the 1980s and 90s, The 44 Bar began evolving from a simple tavern into a more complete bar and grill. Food offerings expanded, the location as well became more of a destination for locals and visitors traveling through the Mission Valley. During this period, the building underwent updates and expansions, including improved dinning areas, a more developed kitchen, a place to grab coffee or a snack for the road. The business soon became known for serving hearty meals alongside its traditional atmosphere.
Late 1990s Ownership Changes
Like many long-standing Montana establishments, The 44 Bar changed ownership several times over the years, in The late 1990’s, the business transitioned again, with continued efforts to expand food service and modernize the operation while trying to preserve its historic character.
Today, Post Creek 44 continues to carry forward decades of history, serving locals, travelers, and visitors, while honoring the role as a long-standing fixture in the Mission Valley community.
